What Is The Secret Songwriting Society?
The Secret Songwriting Society gathers in Forest City Brewery’s Cafe Room on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Doors open at 7:00pm and the Society commences at 7:30pm. This gathering is open to anyone curious about creating something. Both new and experienced creators are welcome, as well as anyone curious to try something new and spontaneous.
The exhibition of simple song-craft is the centerpiece of these gatherings, but at its core, the Secret Songwriting Society is about embracing the spirit of creating anything. Together we will tackle the all-important step of simply beginning the process.
But what actually happens at the
Secret Songwriting Society?
It’s a two part night….
The first half of the evening spotlights 3 featured artists who will each play one song. The song they perform was started based on a prompt given to them a few weeks before the gathering. Each artist will speak briefly and answer a few questions about the challenge and journey of making their new song.
The second half of the night will involve the full gathering collectively writing a simple song. That’s right! Together we will throw paint, make sounds, and combine mystery ingredients until some sort of simple song emerges.
That’s the long and short of it. Expect an evening full of twists and turns and other surprises.
Why is it “Secret”?
Creative processes often begin in private places—Bedrooms, basements, practice spaces, journals, sketchbooks, memo recorders. The Secret Songwriting Society has everything to do with new creation in its simplest, rawest, most raggedy form. Because the creative process often begins in private places, away from prying eyes and nosy news feeds, we aim to foster an environment with minimal presence of phones and external distractions. No video or recordings will be collected/posted, and the song that the group collectively creates will never be heard outside the walls of a given night’s session. We ask everyone in attendance to put their phone away and give their full attention to the process. At Secret Songwriting Society, we will approach creation like a Buddha Board (art gone soon after it’s made). We will celebrate the act of creating something, and then be okay with the outcome fading. Rejoice in the process and move on to the next creative adventure.
Who Are the Hosts?
Kate & Adam, also known as the Baker’s Basement. We are a Cleveland based musical duo absolutely smitten by the act of making stuff. While writing, recording, and performing songs are our greatest obsessions, we also dabble in photography, film, story, sculpture, drawing, and painting.
